Important News • DnD email addresses spoofed

If you receive spam or virus/worm-loaded email that appears to be from a demonsanddarlings.com address, it's NOT!

Our domain has apparently become prolific enough on the 'net that nefarious spammers have been able to grab and falsely send emails which appear to be from our domain (this is known as spoofing), including my own (Slash, DnD Director) personal address slashATdemonsanddarlingsDOTcom.

There is nothing I/we can do about this except to ask, remind and recommend that everyone get, and keep updated, anti-virus software and ideally a firewall on their computer(s). Also note that I, Slash, have experience and worked in the computer industry for 27 years, therefore we have exceptional security on our end, all the way from our website hosting company to my personal machine from which I now write this.

To help you identify whether an email was actually sent from us (before you open it): 1) We do not send unsolicited email directly to anyone's personal account, 2) our subject headers are rarely, if ever, misspelled and 3) most often we are either replying to you with a subject you will recognize OR we begin the subject with something in square braces, very often "[Demon News]" or "[Demon Update]". To learn more, read this article by another industry expert, "Why I'm not sending you viruses".

Spetsnaz and Obscenity Trial dual headlining United Tour 2008 with DJs Noir and Brianne. Cafe Lura, 3184 N Milwaukee; $8.00 cover; 10PM-3AM; 21+.

"Swedish electro-berzerkers Spetsnaz were formed by Pontus Stålberg and Stefan Nilsson in Örebro, Sweden in the autumn of 2001. With the powerful vocals, frenetic pounding bass lines and relentless rhythmic assault, Spetsnaz have the aggression and the melody to be the missing link between the heavy scene and the pop scene."

"..it is the strong voice of Oliver Wand that carries the catchy electropop songs like ’Go Away’ and ’Lecture’... ’My Mind Your Mind’ is a potential single with a huge 80’s feel that can go straight into the charts. ’So Easy’ and ’Inside Out’ remind a bit of And One and the dark EBM influenced ’This Place’ reminds of Covenant.. Obscenity Trial delivers a very well-balanced album with That Night of which I’m sure it will appeal to many people."

Gothic Graze occured at 7:00PM at Dong-Ky Vietnamese, 4877 N Broadway, 773-989-5579

Everyone who RSVP'd wound up cancelling last minute. However, I picked up a couple of the vegetarian choices to take home. I ordered a tofu curry, with which was served a small bag with lettuce leaves and fresh basil sprigs (!) and a tofu "crepe" which was tofu somehow fried up like an omelet with fresh broccoli, bean sprouts, tofu and herbs. Both were very yummy AND I believe vegan. This place is really inexpensive, staff were friendly and its definitely worth trying! --Slash

March 29 • Gothic Graze

Gothic Graze occured at 7:00PM at Icosium Kafe, 5200 N Clark St, 773-271-5233.

Icosium was suggested by one of our regular Grazers and a great suggestion it was! This place specializes in everything crepe from main course to dessert. Suggested combinations for your crepe filling are on the menu, but you can also choose your own from an amazing list of high quality ingredients - veggie or carnivore. You can even get crepe fillings as a salad if you don't want the crepe. So, food was awesome, but service was only "okay". They don't take reservations, so I was worried we wouldn't have a table... luckily I convinced them to at least make an effort to make room for us and it turned out we had precisely the number of seats we needed. All in all, I don't think I would make a special trip to Icosium, but whenever I'm in the neighborhood again they'll be one of my top choices to dine. --Slash

I and my partner Michael showed up at 6:45PM to attempt to get us a table(s) for the 6 RSVP's, but was told they didn't know how long it would be before we could be seated. The staff were polite, but were rather vacant and didn't appear terribly interested in finding a way to accomodate us. As it turned out, our party increased to 10 while we were waiting outside - meanwhile smaller parties were being seated. Clearly, this restaurant wasn't going to make an effort to hold tables to make room for us. Therefore, once the last of our expected guests arrived, we all agreed to go to the Ethiopian Diamond a few blocks north.

Hopefully no one else showed up at Alice's after 7:15. I called Alice's to request that they steer any late-comers over to Ethiopian Diamond, and they said they would, but of course they're under no obligation to do so.

At Ethiopian Diamond, with a party of 10 and no reservation and despite the fact that the place was quite packed, we were seated very quickly! We received water and napkins right away, menus shortly thereafter, but alas, service declined from that point on. I must comment that I've been to Ethiopian Diamond many times, often with large groups, and never had such slow service. While they're usually quite busy on the weekends, they seemed overwhelmed by what appeared to be a larger than normal crowd for that time of night on a Saturday. The owner himself was our server (a rare occurrence on weekends, so I assume they were short-staffed) and eventually, about 20 minutes after being seated he came by to let us know he'd be back shortly to take our orders. We then waited another 15 minutes before one of our party flagged down another staffer who then reminded the owner to come take our orders. Once orders were finally placed, we waited extraordinarily long for our food, although we were visited twice during our wait with apologies that it was taking so long.

Regardless of our long wait, I personally excuse the restaurant - we were a large party without reservation and were treated politely and with apology. The food was consistent with my own previous experiences, quite exceptional! Sadly, while my own previous experience has shown a great deal of respect for vegans/vegetarians, two of our party received the wrong order - a fish dish as opposed to the tofu alicha (a new item) they ordered. With such difficulties, as one would expect, we weren't charged for the extra dish and they left the wine orders and a couple of other beverages off of our ticket.

Overall, some of our party may not return to Ethiopian Diamond, but most enjoyed the food they received and knowing that such mistakes are rare for this restaurant, I would encourage people to return. --Slash

December 29 • Gothic Graze

Gothic Graze occured at 7:00PM at Afghan Restaurant, 2818 W Devon Ave, 773-262-8000.

Although we made a reservation for 20, expecting at least that, we wound up with only 8 guests. Regardless of the fact that the restaurant lost another large reservation they could have taken had we known our true number, the staff were very accomodating and friendly and service was good.

The restaurant has a very limited decor, with Afghan-related pictures on the walls, but I believe all in our party felt the food made up for it - as one typically finds.

The food was amazing and interesting for both meat eaters and veggies. Personally, I had a pumpkin dish which was unexpectedly yummy - just the right balance of seasoning while letting the rich, sweet pumpkin flavor come through. With our appetizers we were served a green hot sauce which was spectacular - none of us knew exactly what it was, but it had a great balance of spicy and tangy flavor. The lentil soup, which could have been dull and bitter, was instead extremely flavorful and a reason on its own to try this restaurant.

Many in our party plan to return to this restaurant and tell their friends. --Slash

November 24 • Gothic Graze

Gothic Graze, a once-monthly gathering to try a new restaurant with old and new friends in the goth/goth-friendly community begins with a 7:00PM gathering at Peacock Cafe, 6014 N Broadway Ave, 773-262-2005.

Nearly all of the 10 or 12 attendees had a good experience, I believe.

The restaurant itself isn't entirely cozy although it's rather small. White walls, too-bright lighting and sparse decoration make it uninviting, but contrarily the staff were thrilled we were there and seemed to be trying their hardest to make a good impression. We were introduced to homestyle pan-roasting of coffee beans for our modified buna - thick, rich coffee served in a clay pot. At first, the beans smelled burnt, but the resulting coffee, which is served very thick - like Turkish coffee, for those familiar with that style - while having tones of over-roasting was regardless fantastically rich and quite wonderful for a true coffee lover.

The food was very tasty! While service implied that staff were overwhelmed by our number, I personally felt they tried hard. Special requests were welcomed and honored, yet one of our party received a dish which wasn't quite what was ordered, still it was good. The flavors were slightly different than what one expects from Ethiopian food here in America - less focus on relative sweetness and more focus on the natural flavors and Eritrean spices, which can be a bit bitter, but in a good way.

Overall, many of our guests claimed they would return to this restaurant. --Slash

May 18 - 24 • Brand Upon The Brain!

Brand Upon The Brain

Demons and Darlings helped promote Guy Madden's Brand Upon The Brain, which ran May 18 - 24 at the Music Box Theatre. "A phantasmagoric story that could be a collaboration between Edgar Allan Poe and Salvador Dali. It's an astonishing film: weird, obsessed, drawing on subterranean impulses, hypnotic."- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times. Opening weekend audiences were treated to a very special performance with live narration by Crispin Glover, live orchestra and sound effects by on-stage foley artists, as well as a live castrato providing the lyrical portions with his hauntingly beautiful voice. The live performance was definitely the most compelling and amazing, but the version with pre-recorded soundtrack is certainly a must-see as well.

February 2 • Free ticket drawing to Nosferatu movie

Gene Siskel Film Center presented a new print of NOSFERATU THE VAMPYRE 1979, Werner Herzog, Germany, 124 min. With Klaus Kinski, Isabelle Adjani, Bruno Ganz   "You will never see a better Dracula film." --Gene Siskel, Chicago Tribune   Herzog’s version of the Dracula myth is the most chilling since Murnau’s 1922 NOSFERATU, which it honors without imitating. It is a truly Medieval vision, stripped of Romantic and Victorian frills, with a remorseless fixation on death and apocalypse, evoked by rushing clouds, parades of coffins, and hordes of rats. Kinski’s superbly disciplined interpretation of the vampire is creepy, sepulchral, and repellent, more vermin than human. English-language version, filmed simultaneously with the German one. 35mm. August 5 • Our very first First Saturday gothic industrial party kicks off with a fundraiser!
ALL PROCEEDS HELP PAY PERFORMER'S MEDICAL BILLS!

The Show: The GCC, its staff, and the following artists are donating their time and talent to entertain and delight you!
  • Ron Fitzgerald, Gothic Illusionist will perform his dark illusions and is also your host-extraordinaire for the evening.
  • Velvet Hammer, an all female dark, creepy rock n roll band will play a few acoustic tunes.
  • Kevin Burke, "psychic comedian", of Defending the Caveman fame, is all set to make you laugh so hard your fangs fall out, and
  • DJ Brianne will deliver dark danceable pleasure all night long with her own special mix of New Wave, 80's, and gothic music.
  • Just confirmed: belly dance performances by Read My Hips!
  • Plus, there's even more! There will be a silent auction including work donated by Chad Savage, as well as Scott Jackson of the Halloween Art Exhibit, Miss Lilly Prinn, and others along with door prizes, munchies, and drink specials!

  • Saturday, August 5, 2006, 9pm-3am at Spot 6, 3343 N Clark. $7 at door / $5 w/ GCC card (VIP members "free" ticket not valid for this fundraiser. Additional suggested donation, $3 to $5); 21+ w/ ID required.

The Reason: Gothic model and performer, Lycanthra, suffered severe burn injuries during her recent performance as magician's assistant to Ron Fitzgerald on the fateful demon night of 6.6.06. Ron was also injured, but luckily he has insurance. Lycanthra doesn't and her emergency room and recovery medical bills have soared to over $6000! Lycanthra is an independant artist and member of the gothic community. As anyone knows, neither status affords a gracious income!

HACK/SLASH: STAGEFRIGHT Slasher movies. You know the genre... But what if the last survivor of the massacre decides to take matters in her own hands and hunt down the Slashers herself? That’s the premise of the hit horror comic book ‘Hack/Slash’ from Chicago’s Devil’s Due Publishing that New Millennium Theatre Company brings screaming to life on stage. HackSlash StagefrightFlaming Dames in Vamp

Fri and Sat at midnight, Oct 14-Nov 5.

November 2003• Gothic Council of Chicago Inception

Founders Galen and Linda held the first meetings to find people in Chicago's gothic and industrial music and culture communities who would like to become part of this project. This project was originally conceived after Linda and Galen went to an event in Milwaukee, WI. organized by a group somewhat posthumously known as the Milwaukee Gothic Council. While the "Milwaukee Gothic Council" is really just a joke name, there were talented and dedicated people in Milwaukee's "scene" who gathered together under that moniker and put on great events that held not only a love of the music and culture, but also of community and comradery. This is what the Gothic Council of Chicago (GCC) was formed to promote and foster, but to go further as an official non-profit arts organization.
